PRESS RELEASE SAN FRANCISCO, CA, February 12, 2003 -- "And the Oscar goes to…" That famous phrase will be repeated often on the evening of March 23, 2003 at the 75th Annual Academy Awards. Among the nominated films announced in Beverly Hills on Wednesday are two films that feature the work of MediaBubble visual effects artists, Star Wars, Episode II: Attack of the Clones (Visual Effects) and Hero (Best Foreign Language Film). "It was a great year," said Cedrick Chan, artist and co-founder of MediaBubble. "We had a role in the teams that helped realize the vision of two internationally respected directors, American movie icon, George Lucas and China's internationally and critically acclaimed director, Zhang Yimou." While, Lucas' Star Wars saga needs little introduction in the U.S., Yimou's Hero has yet to hit the Western market. Despite not having a set release date or any promotion in the U.S., Hero has already garnered a Golden Globe and Golden Berlin Bear nomination in addition to its Oscar nod. The martial arts film is a departure from Zhang's usual stark, bleak Chinese films that earned him international acclaim, but Hero has managed to smash several box office records in Asia. It would be hard to top two Oscar-nominated films, but Chan sees bigger things on the horizon for MediaBubble. "Awards and accolades for films are nice," Chan said, "but MediaBubble isn't just about making movies. Media, not just motion pictures, is evolving into something that will transform cultures and communities around the world. We want to be a positive force in that global media evolution. Accomplishing that would top any movie award or accolade." Hero will be distributed domestically by Miramax in 2003 and stars Jet Li, Zhang Ziyi, Maggie Cheung, Tony Leung and Donnie Yen.
